Who am I

My name is Juliette, born in the Dominican Republic and raised in different countries in Europe. My name does not suggest my multi ethnic background but my darker skin does. On this basis, I believe that I am often over scrutinised and denied opportunities. During my childhood, I struggled with dyslexia and other related learning conditions that made my school early life difficult in an education system that relied entirely on monthly examinations and oral assessments. I spent many hours in the library trying to achieve a minimal result. I did succeeded but at the expense of giving up play time early in life. This is the reason because I am passionate about social justice and I give happily my free time to causes related to disability and the improvement of people’s life.

In the last five years, I have undertaken a number of jobs to finance my studies while raising a young family. Downing College in Cambridge offered me a managerial position and with it, the opportunity to fit my studies as well as my family commitments. I met extraordinary hardworking people but also experienced what I believe to be unreasonable and unjustifiable behaviour.

Why my case matters

During my employment at Downing College, I believe I was subjected to harassment, excessive hostility and discriminated against because of my multi-ethnic and nationality background. I believe I was dismissed without any real foundations and that my complaints were all ignored. Corporations and institutions such as Cambridge University have a social responsibility to fulfil the law and give the best example so people can succeed.

I believe I was subjected to derogatory requests and denied on most occasions my unpaid breaks which affected me both physically and mentally. Following a Data Subject Access Request, I discovered I was over criticised, scrutinised and harassed in comparison to my European colleague with the same work responsibilities.

Society has evolved and so the law that protects our values and our rights amongst a few. However, legal compliance and success of these legislations is only possible if society and institutions such as this, have zero tolerance towards racism and adhere to the law. Without this approach, legislations are meaningless and many stay behind unable to contribute. Society cannot simply advance if we leave a few behind.

After thoughtful consideration, I came to the conclusion that Cambridge university should do more than just a mere statement of diversity and inclusion in their website. They should have done more to promote this statement and make sure that all staff are treated equally as they hold a position of trust. Their level of response to my complaint was very poor and I consider biased. I do not believe they have any credible anti-discrimination policies to protect their employees and allow racism continue to flourish.

Unfair Dismissal

In absence of information to the contrary, I believe my dismissal was because I wasn't the same nationality as the head of department and his colleagues. Harassing and dismissing people because of their nationality or over protecting certain nationalities over the rest has serious consequences for our democracy.

My tribunal claim will also argue that Downing College did not support me when I complained about discrimination and looked away, nor did they support me with my dyslexia while doing the training. I raised this but my request was not only ignored, they made me feel ashamed for having this condition. Unfortunately, I cannot afford to do this on my own. I have reached the step where help to raise funds for legal representation is necessary.

I would like to set a legal precedent where institutions and big corporations have a legal duty beyond the mere statement on diversity to treat us all with respect and equality.

Naturally Downing College deny any wrongdoing and only an employment tribunal is able to decide whether they have in fact discriminated, harassed, victimised or unfairly dismissed me.

Next Steps - Claim

The next step in my case is to lodge my Claim Form and Particulars of Claim in the employment tribunal. My lawyers inform me we will issue in early November 2024. My claim will allege discrimination and harassment due to race and will also likely include victimisation. It may also include some form of unfair dismissal.

I want to raise an initial target of £1,000 with a stretch of £25,000 to pay for my legal expenses. The fees will go towards my solicitors costs or a barrister to represent me at the trial of this matter.

In a cost of living crises I ask that you give only what you can really afford. If you cannot afford to contribute then liking or sharing this crowd funder on social media can really help.

Many thanks for all your help.
