Uncaring Landlords for Elderly
Uncaring Landlords for Elderly
Who am I?
I am Anyck Augustin. I have an elderly mother who needs my help as she lives a in private rented flat which has been repaired badly, and her landlord doesn't seems to care at all.
My mother's case
My mother has a Company landlord with a very large number of properties. They make a fortune by charging high rents and doing nothing to keep properties in a reasonable state of repair. Even emergencies like the boiler breaking down leaving tenants without heating and hot water are ignored. If tenants try to take action they are evicted.
My mother is a pensioner who has lived in her home for some 40 years. Her tenancy started when private tenants still had security of tenure so she is in the rare position of being able to fight for her rights – at least she will be able to if she receives financial help, as her pension takes her just over the threshold for legal aid, so she has to raise funds to pursue her case.
For more than 16 years, my mother has been living with serious disrepair which has taken its toll on her physical and mental health. When the local authority finally started enforcement in January 2018, the landlord finally agreed to get the works done. The works were too extensive to be done with my mother in occupation, so they should have provided alternative accommodation for her. But when they gave an undertaking that the work would be completed within four weeks, she agreed to stay with me for that period. Over a year later, the property remains uninhabitable. Works to eradicate rainwater coming into the flat were not done – the water damage was simply plastered over, and now the flat is as wet as it was before.
Why is this important?
If we can win this case, it will not only help a frail, elderly and frightened tenant. It will help the many other renters living is this landlord’s properties.
How much are we raising and why?
