Suffolk County Council are considering a planning application for a huge 25.4 hectare (63 acres = the size of 35 football pitches!) quarry extension on open farmland close to the Hen Reedbeds Nature Reserve (Suffolk Wildlife Trust), inside the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) on a feeding ground for curlews.

After widespread opposition from local residents, environmental organisations, councillors and our MP during the recent revision of the local plan, a planning inspector stated that the recently adopted local plan was unsound if it included this site. Eventually the council adopted what is now their current local plan excluding this development.

However, the council officer for the case has stated that he still supports the current planning application for the quarry, despite it being excluded from the local plan and rejected by the planning inspector. The planning application is due to be considered by the council planning committee on 24th March.

We are raising funds to pay our solicitor and to fund a professional landscape visual impact assessment for the council planning committee meeting on 24th March. We need your support: please contribute and share this page now!

We want to protect an area of farmland and nature reserves in the AONB from becoming an industrial waste land.

We are paying for a professional landscape visual assessment and for legal advice.

This will cost £3360 in legal fees and an estimated £7000 for the landscape consultant, making £10,360 in total. Thank you very much for your support.

Landscape Visual Impact Assessment (LVIA) under way

This will show in a professional and authoritative way how the proposed quarry would have an unacceptable impact on the AONB. Michelle Bolger Expert Landscape Consultancy should have completed their final report by the end of the first week in March.

Good legal advice received so far

Thank you for the donations so far. We have received some heartening legal advice from our solicitors, basically saying that the only lawful action for the council would be to refuse planning permission. There is still plenty more advice and evidence to come, which should further strengthen our case. So please keep the donations coming.

What we are asking you to help prevent

Before: The picture above shows the area of the proposed development as it is now.

Hopefully not after: The second photo shows the existing pit.
