Should Anna Brees Be Sued For Libel?
Should Anna Brees Be Sued For Libel?
My name is Jacqui Deevoy. I’ve been a freelance journalist for over three decades. In recent tweets to her 100k followers, and in a subsequent interview with an alternative news channel, journalist Anna Brees committed libel against me on several counts. She stated that I was “mentally unwell”, “at best stupid” and repeatedly accused me of being “a troublemaker” and a creator of “chaos”. She tagged people I work for (namely The Daily Telegraph) in one tweet - a deliberate and malicious action, taken to cause harm/damage to my reputation, my career and my well-being. On Mothers’ Day (March 19th), she continued with her campaign of hate, announcing that I have “lied to vulnerable families” and that I’m “dangerous”. On that day, she not only tweeted derogatory comments about colleagues of mine but also contacted several of my friends and Twitter followers, providing her phone number and asking them to call her so she could provide them with evidence as to how dangerous I am. She caused great upset to one friend in particular who lost her son to suicide and was struggling as it was Mothers’ Day. I’ve consulted my legal team and they’ve confirmed that all these actions all amount to libel.
Call to action. If you believe Anna Brees should be taken to task for her behaviour, I’ll gladly take a stand. I don’t have the money to do this, so need to raise funds to cover initial legal costs. As many of you will know, I’ve worked tirelessly and often without pay over the last three years in order to get the truth heard and to help give a voice to those who were being ignored. If you think you can help, please show your support by contributing and sharing this page.
What am I trying to achieve? With this case, I hope to stop Anna Brees from spreading lies and misinformation about people who are doing everything in their power to help others and share the truth.
What is the next step in the case? I’ve spoken to lawyers and need to pay £1,080 on account today. This covers the initial consultation, the collation and inspecting of the libellous tweets and videos and the drafting of the initial letter, explaining my intentions to Ms Brees. There shouldn’t be too many subsequent meetings but I will need to pay further amounts as the case progresses. My aim is to get a public apology from Brees and a retraction of her untruthful statements. I’m also seeking financial compensation for personal distress, for my time and for potential loss of earnings.
How much am I hoping to raise and why? If the case goes to court, my lawyers say costs could be as high as £80,000 but I’m hoping to reach a resolution before it gets to that stage. That’s why I’m looking for an initial amount of £1,200.
I’m not taking this action solely for myself but for also for anyone else who’s been the victim of this woman’s lies. If Brees is made an example of, hopefully she and others who are prone to sharing untruths about good and honest people - people who are fighting for freedom and truth - out of sheer maliciousness, might think twice before doing what they do.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and thank you in advance to all who make a contribution. I will keep you posted.
