Give A Voice to Young People!! SEND North Yorks
Who are we?
Save SEND Services is a group for Parent Carers and Young People with SEND who have come together to fight cuts to all services affecting Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.
Our Concern
Our current concern is; North Yorkshire County Council have finished consulting on introducing charges to post 16 Special Educational Needs and Disabilities transport. They consulted parents and carers but did not consult with those who this proposed change to policy will affect the most the Young People. Young People with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities have a right to be consulted and have their voices heard. They have an equal right to be asked and given the opportunity to have their voices heard.
North Yorkshire is the largest County in the UK covering 30000 sq miles and there are few colleges Young People can attend which means they travel for long periods of time to reach their colleges. There is a lack of schools and colleges to cater for the needs of our Young People in North Yorkshire they have no choice but to travel. It is unfair for them to be charged when they cannot attend a school or college in their locality. the cuts have affected all areas of services for special educational needs and disabilities and already and there is more to come we want to ensure any consultation to cut vital services are conducted legally and equally.
What are we raising the funds to pay for?
Save SEND Services North Yorks are calling for the council to re consult so that young people can have an equal chance of having their voices heard. The decision has not yet been passed by the executive committee therefore we are raising funds for legal advice and an initial letter clarifying legislation and advising on the legalities of the consultation.
North Yorkshire SEND services have been cut across the Inclusion Service, Short breaks and Disabled Children's Social Care, Specialist Careers
Next Steps
If we are not successful in achieving the aim of having the consultation dismissed and going back out to consult lawfully including young people with special educational needs and disabilities, we will be looking to raise funds to apply for Judicial Review.
