Domestic abuse increased by up to 50% during the first lockdown*. Demand for our services is at a record high.
The domestic abuse crisis
The COVID-19 pandemic has made women increasingly vulnerable to violence and abuse as perpetrators can close the curtains on potential onlookers in the outside world and shut the door on life-saving support for their victims.
We have heard from many women experiencing domestic abuse whose abusers have taken advantage of social-distancing measures so the abuse can go unnoticed and the abuser can evade justice: “The isolation is so extreme.”
At the start of lockdown, we saw a 200% surge in the demand for our online support as more and more women reached out to remote services as their only safe routes to get help whilst trapped at home with their abuser. The demand for our helpline advice has been constantly increasing since then.
Our Story
Rights of Women's small team of helpline staff and volunteers support over 2,500 survivors each year - women experiencing domestic abuse and sexual violence, many of whom need support to keep themselves and their children safe - and our website provides impartial expert advice to 500,000 visitors annually.
For many of these women, our services are a lifeline:

“I was assaulted as a child. I felt powerless to confront my abuser, then, but not this time. I called Rights of Women and they gave me reassurance and believed me, I will never forget the calls. Most of the people I went to for help or support didn’t want to hear my story. Whereas their lawyers would spend an hour on the phone with me, they were amazing. I didn’t want to live at one point, they made me feel strong again.”
But there are many more women out there who desperately need our support.
Domestic abuse is an epidemic in England and Wales, and the pandemic has enabled it to reach tipping point. Now, more than ever, we need your support to help meet the demand for our services and provide a lifeline for survivors.

To our incredible supporters,
I’m writing to thank you for your generous donation to our fundraiser. Together, you raised over £19,000 to help women experiencing domestic abuse during the pandemic.
Your support has enabled us to reach more women than ever before through our advice lines. With your donations we were able to recruit more advice line volunteers and reach 16% more women in need through our Family Law advice lines alone.
Figures only provide one part of the picture, so we wanted to share a small snippet of some of the heart-warming responses we’ve received from women on the advice line, since International Women’s Day:

“I think this service is a life-saver because when you are at your lowest ebb you are a lifeline to life really. I wouldn’t have known what to do. …I feel empowered.”
