My name is Matthew Petgrave, and I’ve been a professional ice hockey player for the past seven years, most recently with the EIHL's Sheffield Steelers. Hockey has been my lifelong passion, and I consider it a great privilege to have built a career in the sport.

On October 28, 2023, I was involved in a tragic accident that resulted in the passing of fellow ice hockey player Adam Johnson.

There is an ongoing police investigation and the legal process has been long and challenging.

I want to express my deepest gratitude to everyone who has supported me, including my teammates, fellow players, and league personnel, who have stood by me from the beginning and continue to do so. Your support has been invaluable to me and my family during this incredibly difficult time.

Initially, I had the benefit of Insurance Cover, but through no fault of my own, this has been halted. Additionally, the time and costs involved in the legal investigation and potential court proceedings are difficult for me to cover on a privately funded basis. This is especially challenging because my UK Visa has expired, preventing me from working as a professional ice hockey player while I continue to need legal assistance.

I am seeking help to cover some of my legal costs whilst I am subject to Police bail, as well as additional costs if the matter proceeds to criminal court. Any remaining funds will be donated to initiatives that promote safety in hockey, via a CrowdJustice campaign in-line with their unused funds policy.

Thank you,

Matthew, Chloe, and the Petgrave Family

Matthew Petgrave Update - Thank You for Your Support

I want to begin by saying thank you to each and every one of you who has supported Matt during this incredibly difficult time.

When we first launched this campaign, we hoped the funds raised would be enough to cover Matt’s legal costs. However, we’ve now been informed that there is an application to extend the bail for another three months, prolonging the uncertainty and strain on our lives.

No one should have their rights stripped away while facing an ongoing investigation, especially when no charges have been brought. Yet, Matthew remains unable to work, support himself, or even return home. This has only added to the immense toll this situation has taken on his well-being.

We never wanted to ask for help again, but with no clear resolution in sight, we have no other option. Any donation, no matter the amount, would be deeply appreciated and would go directly toward covering Matt’s legal fees. If you’re unable to contribute, sharing this page with others who may be willing to help would also mean the world to us.

This has been the most painful and overwhelming period of our lives, and watching someone I love go through this has been incredibly difficult. Despite everything, we are doing our best to stay strong, and the support and kindness from so many people have been a source of strength.

We continue to recognise the heartbreaking nature of this situation, and our thoughts remain with everyone affected. We hold onto hope that this will soon come to an end.

With love,

Chloe & the Petgrave Family
