HELP US SEEK JUSTICE FOR RAYMI

Our 14-year-old son, Raymi Willka Saldana Rojas, was our world—our only child, our joy, and our hope for the future. Tragically, Raymi’s life was cut short in a devastating drowning incident, during a boat trip in Amsterdam while on holiday.

To this day, the circumstances of his death remain unknown and unclear, and we are left with many unanswered questions that no parent should ever have to face.

We are determined to find out what happened to Raymi—what could have been done to save him, and how we can ensure no other family suffers the same unimaginable heartbreak. But we need your help to make this possible.

Who Was Raymi?

Raymi was extraordinary in every way. He was an exceptionally talented student at William Ellis School in Camden, London, and a gifted musician with an incredible future ahead of him. He excelled in everything he did, including his love for English writing—a passion so profound that his school now has an English writing award in his name. He was a virtuoso multi-instrumentalist, known for winning music scholarships and playing at prestigious venues and music festivals. His mentors and teachers at Music Education Islington MEI part of Guildhall School of Music & Drama are setting up an award in his name, in recognition of his talent and joy for music. At just 13 years old, he became the youngest person ever to perform at the Jazz Café in London, showcasing his love for music, which he shared with us, his parents, who are professional musicians. As was written in an obituary in The Guardian, he was passionate about peace, justice and humanity and his brilliance, kindness, and vibrant spirit touched everyone who met him.

But now, Raymi is gone. His life was taken far too soon, leaving us broken, grieving, and searching for answers.

What Happened to Raymi?

In the summer of 2024, we agreed to let Raymi join his friend and their family on what was meant to be a dream holiday in Amsterdam. For three days, he enjoyed every moment. But on the fourth day, with his friend’s family, he was taken on their boat to the IJ Bay in Amsterdam. Raymi didn’t know how to swim, and tragically, he drowned.

We have been given little information about what happened that day. We are unclear about how he ended up in the water, whether there were safeguards in place, and whether more could have been done to protect him.

Because Raymi died abroad, navigating the legal system has been incredibly difficult, especially as English is not our first language. We are originally from Bolivia and Peru, but Raymi was born here in the UK.

Why We Need Your Help

A Coroner’s Inquest has been opened to investigate Raymi’s death. This Inquest is our only chance to uncover the truth about what happened that day, to identify whether his death could have been prevented, and to ensure that lessons are learnt to protect other children in the future.

But the journey ahead is long and daunting. Inquests are complex legal processes, for which we need expert legal representation, to ensure a thorough and fearless investigation into Raymi’s death. We are not entitled to Legal Aid for representation at the Inquest, and the legal fees are far beyond what we can afford.
