A big thank you to everyone who contributed to our call for funds to pay for a legal opinion on whether we have grounds to launch a Judicial review into Haringey Council’s disposal of Hornsey Town Hall.

The advice we have received is that there is a chance that the Courts might be persuaded to interfere with Haringey's decision to grant planning permission. We feel it is only fair to afford our supporters the opportunity to take that chance but to do so we need to raise £20,000 very quickly.

We are therefore now asking you, your neighbours and friends to back the launch of a Judicial Review by contributing to the fighting fund and help us to raise the £20k in order to be able to cover all costs of a full judicial review. Please contribute what you can but most importantly share this page with your friends, neighbours and colleagues on social media and email.

We will only bring proceedings if we reach our target. If we do not reach it then your donation will not be taken from your card.

This is the last chance we have to stop this disposal. Haringey could have delivered so much more for those on the housing waiting list, for our small businesses, for our arts and for our community.

Please contribute and share this page urgently!

Case Background

Stop the sale

Hornsey Town Hall Community Interest Company is a group of local people who believe that the sale of Hornsey Town Hall and Green to the Far East Consortium is a bad deal.

The bid that won FEC the deal changed beyond recognition by the time that they applied for planning permission. This should invalidate the procurement (sale) process, so we want this tested in the courts.

Please help us get legal advice about launching a Judicial Review to stop the sale if it is not legal.

Our vision for a better future

  •  Keep the town hall and green in public ownership

  •  Provide  a decent amount of social rent housing (FEC are providing 7.5%, Haringey’s Local Plan calls for 40%)

  •  Give Haringey a sustainable and thriving community arts centre

  •  Offer affordable workspace for small businesses

  •  Build much needed new housing in the car park that respects the Conservation Area

  •  Retain £millions of profit from the sale of new housing within the council’s budget – not lining the pockets of a tax-haven based developer.

#HTHBadDeal

We think the sale to FEC is a BAD DEAL because:

  •  Haringey’s independent viability assessment of the scheme valued FEC’s profit at £27 million with a hotel valued at £20 million. Haringey will receive just £3.5 million

  •  Our conservation area will be blighted forever by the building of TWO huge (7 storey) tower blocks

  •  Our public green space has been sold off to a private company

  •  Only 11 out of 146 units built on publicly owned land will be social housing

  •  The independent viability assessment says that FEC should be putting £14.5million into affordable housing, ie: building about 40 affordable units

  •  We’re not getting the world class arts centre with guaranteed community use that the council promised

  •  Over 70 small creative businesses, employing over 100 people, will be kicked out.

A better outcome

We know there is a desire for the future of Hornsey Town Hall to be resolved after decades of inaction. But proceeding with a sale that no-one benefits from is not the way to do it.

There can be a better outcome – but only if we stop this one!

With your help we can get launch the JR and achieve the best possible future for the town hall and our community.

This is a BAD DEAL.

Update 1

Hornsey Town Hall Community Interest Company

April 23, 2018

It’s over

The Hornsey Town Hall CIC have been blown away by the level of support that our campaign has had. We raised over £12,000 in just 4 days. The level of money pledged and the comments on this page shows the palpable anger about selling off the town hall and the hope for something better.

Unfortunately, despite this massive vote of confidence in our fight, the Directors of the HTH CIC have taken the very difficult decision not to take the Judicial Review case forward so PLEASE DO NOT PLEDGE ANY MORE MONEY. We were still several thousand pounds short of our £20K target as of today and as Directors, we would be personally liable to pay the difference in costs should we lose the case. The legal papers had to be served tomorrow – Tuesday 24th April – after which there was no turning back. This was a financial risk too great for us personally but a great shame after the years of work we have put into this.

For you generous people who pledged money, this will not be taken from your bank accounts, as we did not reach our £20k target.

We thank you all hugely for your support throughout our campaign and we’ll see you on the rooftop bar of the HTH Hotel in a couple of years.
