Extinction Rebellion Southwark - Activist Support Fund
Extinction Rebellion Southwark - Activist Support Fund
Summary
This is a fundraiser for climate change activists based in Southwark, that were arrested in London during April's International Rebellion and to prepare for supporting those arrested in actions to come.
What are we trying to achieve?
In April, over 1100 people were arrested for non-violent direct action and a number of Southwark members were among them. Those who were arrested during this rebellion did not take any action lightly or frivolously - they acted in the solemn knowledge that we are running out of both time and options.
This rebellion has already helped to push the climate and ecological emergency onto the political and social agenda, changing the media conversation around the climate and ecological crisis and prompting Parliament - and scores of councils and local authorities - to declare a climate emergency in the weeks that followed.
What is the next step in the case?
XR Southwark has created an Arrestee Support team to provide support to activists going through the process. As legal proceedings begin against arrestees we are raising a fund to assist with the significant costs arising from the legal process . Arrestees come from different walks of life and while some can afford to pay their own legal costs, others need additional financial support
How much we are raising and why?
This is why we need your help and generosity. We are aiming to raise up to £20, 000 to assist with the cost of defending legal proceedings . Any excess funds raised will be used for future legal costs which may be incurred by members of Extinction Rebellion Southwark.
Please give what you can, if you can, and share widely if not.
Thank you for supporting the rebellion.
Love and gratitude,
Extinction Rebellion Southwark - Arrestee Support Working Group
