Extinction Rebellion Lewisham Arrestee Support
Extinction Rebellion Lewisham Arrestee Support
Life on Earth is in crisis. Please help support the people of Lewisham who have put themselves on the line to save it.
We are the Lewisham branch of Extinction Rebellion, an international movement using non-violent civil disobedience to demand our governments act on the climate and ecological emergency. Five of our members (Ed, Kate, Lianna, Mariam and Rosie) were arrested for their non-violent actions at an Extinction Rebellion protest in April. They have since been charged and now need our support to cover costs arising from the legal process.
Kate, from Sydenham, says: "Last year I became a member of Extinction Rebellion. After 20+ years of volunteering and acting with Greenpeace, signing petitions, handing out leaflets on the streets in the hope that the public and government would act on climate change, I was introduced to the IPCC report and Extinction Rebellion's tangible plan to act on it. It was a terrifying read and it motivated me to act - put my comfort aside and my body on the line. I believe that it's the only way that we will get change. Millions of people across the global south are being affected by climate change now, environmental activists are being killed at a rate of 3 a week. Extinction Rebellion's actions have been massively effective in bringing attention to the climate breakdown we are all facing. I am so proud to be a member of Extinction Rebellion and would encourage anyone who cares about the planet's future to get involved."
Lianna, from Forest Hill, says: "I've never been arrested before. I've spent more than a decade campaigning for climate justice - writing to my MP, marching, speaking up for sustainable transport and renewable energy - while carbon emissions continued to grow. Reading The Uninhabitable Earth was a turning point. The science shows that unless our governments change course in the next few years, we may be facing social collapse. The non-violent direct action of Extinction Rebellion has led to an incredible shift in coverage and public awareness about the urgency of climate breakdown. It gives me hope."
This is an opportunity to support local people who have been arrested for their non-violent actions in defence of humanity and all other life on Earth.
As well as the people arrested in April, this fund will be used to support future arrestees too. Please donate anything you can!
