Since Extinction Rebellion declared an open rebellion against the British government, tens of thousands of people from across the country have gathered on the streets in the hope of bringing about meaningful action to save life on the planet.

We cannot carry on like this.

This September rebels are taking to the streets again, bravely putting their bodies on the line in an act of non-violent direct action, to demand that Parliament begin the process of putting 'The Climate and Ecological Emergency Bill' into law.

For our arrestees the story doesn’t end when the streets have emptied. In fact, this is where another journey begins. This journey can be filled with stress and anxiety along with financial pressures. As our fellow rebels take their message into the courtrooms, we need to support them as much as we can.

These arrestees are the lifeblood of our movement. We ask you to stand with us, side-by-side with our arrestees, and donate whatever you can.

In January 2020 we established an Access to Justice fund. This has ensured all UK rebels have access to funded initial legal advice from a protest experienced solicitor. This has proved vital for rebels to feel supported and empowered with knowledge ahead of their hearing. We need your help to ensure we can continue to offer this level of support for rebels in the future.

The money raised will also be used to cover legal fees in longer, more complex cases or strategically important cases which may be heard in the higher courts. In addition it will be used to appeal verdicts and sentences to help protect the rights of future rebels, and to support vulnerable rebels in most need of help.

Where funds allow a small percentage of your donation may be used for climate-related litigation in the higher courts in addition to defendants’ cases.

Why this is an emergency

The world’s leading scientists have given us less than 10 years, and many of them as little as 5, to avert a worldwide climate and ecological catastrophe.

Within the last year alone we have seen devastating fires in the Amazon and Australia, Arctic wildfires in Siberia, irreversible damage to the ice sheets of Greenland. Even here in the UK we are experiencing more extreme weather, from record breaking heatwaves and destructive floods. Without rapid, radical changes we face more floods, wildfires, extreme weather, which will lead to crop failure, mass displacement and the breakdown of society entirely.

Despite this, our governments are still not acting. They are not telling us about the situation we are in, or putting in place a plan with anything close to the urgency or scale needed. 

When a government neglects to protect its citizens, it is not just a citizen’s right to rebel but, many would argue, their duty. As time runs out, we are left with just one option: only a peaceful, planet-wide mobilisation will save us now.
