As absurd as it sounds, this is the reality faced by women every day as a result of the two child tax credit limit policy.
What is the two child tax credit limit policy?
From 6th April 2017 the government has restricted child tax credits to a family’s first two children. If third or subsequent children are born after this date families will no longer qualify for further tax credit support.
Effectively this limits child tax credits to two children, creating yet another barrier for women trying to leave an abusive relationship.
Putting lives at risk
On average, in England and Wales two women are killed a week by a current or ex-partner and 85,000 women experience rape or serious sexual abuse each year – many of whom will be in a relationship with the person who has raped them.
Women’s Aid and Rape Crisis England & Wales work with women every day who tell us that financial concerns are a major barrier to women being able to leave an abusive partner. The two child tax credit limit policy is making this worse.
Although there is an exemption to the policy for victims who disclose that their baby was conceived as a result of rape or coercive control, the reality is that many victims do not feel comfortable or safe doing so. It could lead to further violence from the abuser or even the child making this devastating discovery.
We know that many women will never apply for this exemption as having to disclose rape or abuse to the government is incredibly traumatising and a breach of their right to privacy.
We need your support to remove this dangerous and inhumane barrier
Women’s Aid and Rape Crisis are calling on you to help us join a legal challenge against the government, to overturn the dangerous and inhumane two child tax credit limit policy.
Together we can help eliminate the impact on women and children, especially for those who are living in, or have been able to escape abusive relationships.
Just £10,000 will pay for expert staff time from our two organisations to challenge the legality of two child tax credit limit, joining the Child Poverty Action Group’s wider legal challenge, and representing survivors of domestic abuse and sexual violence who are experiencing unlawful and degrading treatment as a result of this policy.
Please give as much as you can afford to help us reach our target.
What else can you do?

Thanks to you, we have more time to strengthen our case
We’re truly overwhelmed by the response we received in the last few days of our appeal.
Thank you so much to everyone who has helped us hit our target. We couldn’t have done this without your support.
Because we reached our initial goal, we’ve now been given a one month extension to raise even more funds for our cause. This amazing opportunity means that any additional funds raised can be used to strengthen our case. It means we can put more resource behind the legal challenge which will increase our chances of overturning the inhumane two child policy.
If you’d still like to pledge, please do and continue to share our page as much as you can especially on social media.
We’ll keep you updated as our case progresses. Together we are stronger and can continue to make change.

Let's make this last week count
We’ve reached £4000! Thank you so much to everyone who has pledged.
With one week to go, we’re calling on you to join us in our final push to raise vital funds so we can challenge the inhumane two child policy.
Join us for women like Sabrina. For women that are put in the unthinkable position of either disclosing traumatic events to the government, or not being able to support their children.
If we are successful, our Crowdjustice campaign will mean we can challenge the legality of this policy in the courts, and make a difference to survivors’ lives.
But we’ve still got a long way to go and we need your help.
Please pledge and share as much as you can for all the women trapped in abusive relationships because they simply can’t afford to leave.

"A clear breach of the human rights act"
We've now hit the £1k mark! Thank you to everyone who has helped us reach our first milestone. Your support will make a huge difference to protecting women and children across the country.
Tessa Gregory, Partner at Leigh Day solicitors told us why they are representing us in this important challenge:
"The policy of the Government to force women to reveal a sexual assault in order to receive subsistence benefits to which they are legally entitled, is we believe a very clear breach of the human rights act and therefore unlawful. It is a powerful demonstration of why human rights legislation is needed to tackle this kind of ill thought out and degrading treatment of mothers..."
Please continue to help us raise awareness by pledging, sharing this page and telling all of your followers why you are backing our campaign.
We cannot do this without your passion and support.
