Defend Democracy - Lab Cllr Waseem Zaffar trying to suppress the truth
Background
I am being sued by Councillor Waseem Zaffar who was exposed earlier this year as the Birmingham City Labour Councillor and Birmingham City Councillor, and ex-Cabinet Member for Transparency Openness and Equality, who wanted a Catholic School to change its uniform policy to impose wearing of hijabs on Infant Girls. I have been commenting on Twitter about his actions.
Councillor Waseem Zaffar is trying to use the High Court to gag me.
At first Councillor Waseem Zaffar had complained to the Police but after investigating fully they took no action. Then Birmingham City Council, chose to send a letter warning me against using my democratic right to expose his wrongdoing. They properly took no action. Now he has instructed Solicitors and a Barrister to take action against me in the High Court in London. I have to defend myself as every person needs to be able to speak out against elected politicians and those who try to implement Shariah Law in our schools. Zaffar is up for election in 2018 and a fair contest means that I am able to speak out against him
Why I am raising funds
I find myself in a position where I am representing myself in a significant claim for freedom of speech. Councillor Waseem Zaffar alleges that by tweeting about him I am harassing him and he wants an injunction to stop me.
With the serious prospect of this case going to Court, I have to consider legal representation and I am crowdfunding to cover all Legal Fees that I may incur. I am looking to raise Forty Thousand Pounds.
Why is my case important to the public
I am standing up for my democratic right to expose wrong doing by an elected politician. This is a fundamental issue in a democracy as to whether it is possible for an ordinary member of the public to criticise their elected representative in honest and good faith and whether tweets about that politician (where neither libel nor privacy is alleged) directed to the public at large can amount to harassment.
People in public positions should expect to be held to the highest standards and challenged and exposed when they fall short.
I believe that democracy in this country is essential and that injunctions stopping the electorate knowing about their representatives is the start of the slippery slope.
To all those who support democracy please donate to my fighting fund. Thank You!!
